How to Slash Up To 5 1/2 Years Off Your Brain’s “Age!”

You probably already know that exercise and proper diet keeps your body “young.”

But did you know you can also keep your mind young (quite literally)?

In fact, I’ve just come across a study that suggests you can reverse your brain’s age… by up to 5.5 years!

The study, published in the prestigious British medical journal The Lancet, set out to find if folic acid could affect mental performance.[1]

Dutch researchers took 818 participants aged 50 – 70 and split them into two groups.

One group received 800 mcg of folic acid daily for three years

The second group received a placebo.

At the start of the study, all of the participants were given a battery of memory tests to measure cognitive performance.

So what happened?

The group that took folic acid showed a HUGE improvement on the standardized memory tests given at the end of the study. In fact, they did so well that they knocked 5 1/2 years off their ages when it came to their test performance.

And that was the AVERAGE. Some folks erased even more years on their mental “age.”

Bottom line: If you want to keep your memory sharp, seriously consider supplementing with 800 mcg of folic acid daily.

You can find it at most grocery and health food store.
In the end, keeping your brain healthy should be just as important as keeping the rest of your body in tip top shape.

This is especially true if you’re nearing your 50s.

It’s estimated that anywhere from 50-75 percent of Americans over 50 complain of mild memory problems.

And as the baby boomer generation continues to age, it’s expected that around 7.7 million will develop life-threatening mental decline (diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s).

So do everything you can to keep both your body AND mind in great shape.

As for brain health, in addition to taking folic acid, you can start walking regularly. A study in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that walking just 40 minutes, 3 times a week can expand the size of your hippocampus – an area of the brain that’s heavily responsible for your memory.[2]

And, start drinking more green tea. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that the polyphenols in green tea can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease by stopping the formation of beta-amyloid proteins (one of the toxic proteins believed to play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s.)[3]

Follow the tips I’ve given you here today, and you’ll be on the path to having a sharp memory and a healthy brain for years to come!

And by the way … if you’re serious about taking your overall health and fitness to the next level, why not take advantage of your FREE Fitness Consultation? (an $87 value)

Get Stronger and More Flexible With These Moves from Crown Point’s Personal Trainer

Did you know there’s one simple activity most people rarely do after their workouts?

S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G!

Stretching is super-important. It prevents your muscles from getting “tight” and “stiff” — especially after you’ve been working them out, rep after rep.

Plus, there’s the benefits you get, like improved circulation and reduced stress (you DO know that stressing out causes you to tense your muscles without even realizing it, right?)

That’s why today I’m going to share with you 4 simple moves (taken from Yoga) that practically anyone can do.

Doing these moves will not only stretch your muscles, but it’ll also tone them. As a result you’ll be more flexible, look leaner and feel a heck of a lot calmer! [Read more...]

Push Ups For Charity Crown Point

We had an awesome event for the Wounded Warriors Project. We have raised at least $3,000 but won’t know the exact total for a couple of weeks as we wait for money to come in for sponsors.

The Crown Point Police Department, Army Recruiters of Merrillville and Inspiration Fitness battled it out for title of most push ups done. Crown Point Police won by 1 point! Army Recruiters and IFC tied! It was a lot of fun.

We had two Wounded Warrior recipients attend our event. Daryel Sullivan kicked off our event with his amazing story. He was shot in the shoulder while in Iraq. Wounded Warriors flew him to Washington, D.C. and immediately flew his wife and mother to the hospital, paying for their airfare and hotel fees while he healed.

Daniel Acosta, wounded warrior recipient, blew us all away by doing 103 push ups! The winner of the day!

Enjoy the photos! Video to come…

Did You Forget Something? Alzheimer’s

How to Remember Where You Left Your Car Keys… Even If You’re 90!

Memory loss is all-too often associated with old age.

And unfortunately, with good reason.

As most people get older, they become more forgetful. And in serious cases, they can develop dementia and Alzheimer’s (scary stuff, to be sure).

The good news is there are plenty of things you can do to prevent severe memory loss — and in the process develop lots of “Brain” power that will keep your memory razor-sharp, well into your “Golden Years.” [Read more...]

Crown Point Personal Trainers Offer A one-two Punch for Your Physique

If you want to go flab to fab, try this technique on for size…

It’s called supersets (and in a moment, you’ll see why they’re so super!)

Simply put, a super set is when you do two exercises back-to-back, without resting in between.

Here’s a quick example: Let’s say you do a set of bench presses. As soon as you’re done, you’d follow it up immediately with a set of lat pulldowns.

After you’re done with that back exercise, then you can rest. (And believe me, you’ll want to…).

Then, you repeat the process again.

Working out this way burns TONS of calories. Mainly because of the intensity — you’re not resting in between sets.

Supersets also stimulate the production of Growth Hormone (GH) in your body. In case you don’t know, GH is the “holy grail” of hormones. It helps you both burn fat and build muscle.

Think of supersets as a one-two punch that works your muscles, your heart AND lungs (think cardio).

Here’s a sample superset workout you can start using right away. [Read more...]

Jack LaLanne Dies at 96!

Yesterday, American lost a fitness icon, Jack LaLanne. Many of you know him from his recent infomercials promoting raw fruits and veggies and his juicing machine.

If there was ever a person in history that deserves great honor, in my opinion it would be Jack LaLanne. He was relentless in his pursuit to get Americans off the couch and into the gym.

Were you aware that at the age of 43 he performed
more than 1,000 push-ups in 23 minutes on the “You
Asked For It” television show.

At 60, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s
Wharf in San Francisco — handcuffed, shackled and
towing a boat.

At 70, he performed a similar feat in Long Beach harbor.

Simply amazing!

Here is his obituary on yahoo news: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110124/ap_on_en_ot/us_obit_jack_lalanne_11

In closing, words from the amazing man: “The only way you can hurt the body is not use it,” LaLanne said. “Inactivity is the killer and, remember, it’s never too late.”

Crown Point Personal Trainer’s 5 Tips for New Year Success

Achieve Fitness Success With These 5 Food Tips

No matter what your fitness goals — whether it’s to lose fat and reshape your body or pack on some serious muscle — you’ll need proper nutrition to get you there.

In fact, I’d say that 90% of your success is going depend on what you put in your mouth.

That’s right… Nutrition is the number one deciding factor of whether or not you’re going to achieve your goals this year.

That said, there are a few “rules” you can follow that can make things a bit easier and make your diet easier to stick to over the course of this new year.

Tip #1 – It’s all about calories

When it comes to fat loss, the success formula is pretty simple.

Eat less. Move more.

Put differently, you need to burn more calories than you take in.

One great tip to make sure you’re creating a calorie deficit is to weight everything.

If a meal calls for 4 ounces of chicken, then grab a food scale and weigh it. You’d be surprised at the difference between what you think 4 ounces should look like and what it really is.

Tip #2 – Focus on protein at each meal

Whether you’re eating 3 times a day or 6 times a day — each of your meals should be centered around a lean meat.

Great choices are chicken, fish and turkey.

Eggs are good too, despite all the negative things you hear about them.

Having protein with each meal will leave you feeling fuller, boost your metabolism to burn more fat, and help keep your blood sugar and insulin levels from spiking too much at any given meal.

Tip #3 – Drink water or unsweetened tea

One of the easiest ways to get way too many calories in a single day is through liquids.

Sodas, juices and softdrinks are chock-full of a calories.

The best alternative is to steer clear of all those empty calories and instead drink water or unsweetened tea.

I know the thought of just drinking water or tea isn’t too exciting but believe me — your waistline will thank you.

Tip #4 -Avoid packaged foods

Stay clear of foods that come in a bag or box. These are things like donuts, chips, cookies, etc.

All these are incredibly high in calories and are devoid of any worthwhile nutrients.

Tip #5 -Reward yourself once a week

Once you’re eating healthy on a regular basis, it’s important you reward yourself with a “cheat” meal once a week.

This is a meal where you can have ANYTHING you want.

Having this once-a-week break from your diet helps you stay on track, keep you sane, and let you indulge in any cravings you may have had throughout the course of the week.

In all it’s a crucial part to being able to “stick” to a healthy nutrition plan long-term.

So there you have it. Follow these 5 food tips and you’ll be in good shape for the rest of 2011.

One more thing – If you’re serious about taking control of your health and physique, then make sure you take advantage of your FREE Fitness Consultation (an $87 value).

During this consult, you’ll receive detailed information on how to get fit and trim that’s tailored to YOUR body.
